Week 1: The Goldfinch

♦♦ I finished this book a week or two ago and decided to let it settle in before I wrote about it. This very long story kept me until the end, but only because I’d already invested so much time in it. About 3/4 of the way through, I just wanted it to end. I was so frustrated with the character that I started rolling my eyes in exasperation. The story kept telling me he was a smart person, but I guess, just like in real life, smart people do stupid things. . . but over, and over, and over? I wanted to love the book. I love the premise, but I like to love the characters. I just didn’t. I feel a bit hypocritical because I like “real” and “gritty” but this one just missed my mark. Lots of people rated this book very highly, but The Goldfinch didn’t sing to me.

I’ve heard so many good things about this book that I’ve had it on my to-read list for a while, but you’ve made me rethink that! I, too, hate when a character’s supposed to be one way, but all of his/her actions are to the contrary. Not cool!

I liked this one, didn’t love it. I also found myself frustrated and wanted it to end. However, i would still recommend it.
