You’re Not a Princess, Princess

Mercy Academy has created quite a buzz on Social Media with their recent ads. Here’s some commentary from my Good Friday blog. Enjoy.

Good Friday

Have you seen the ads that the private school Mercy Academy has gotten so much press about recently? It’s a private girls academy and they’re pretty compelling, feminist messages. I got pretty much the same message 40 years ago from my parents.

From a young age, my mother told me that I could do anything a boy could do. When I brazenly tested that theory at about 8 by walking out the front door with no shirt on, she let me go. (That lasted all of five minutes, I freaked and ran back for a shirt). My dad made sure that I could change a tire before I went out on my own in the car, and yes, I had to prove it by changing the said tire, while he watched.
