I really enjoy grammar and words. I’ve even been known to make up a few here and there just because it’s fun. However, I just found out that there is a technical term for made-up, blended works of verbal expression. Blended words, according to Grammar Girl, are called Portmanteaus words. You know, things like Brangelina (Brad and Angelina), Spork (spoon and fork) and smog (smoke and fog). One of my favorite (self-coined) Portmanteaus words was born at a charity Scrabble event. Your team got extra points if you made up a word and had a good, colorful definition. There was wine involved, but our word got a great reaction. We came up with “Spontanakedy” which obviously means: The art of spontaneous disrobing.”

Froach an egg — you break it into hot fat, splash hot water on top, plus a pan lid and hey presto you have an egg fried on the bottom and poached on the top. My own invention.
